Description

  4. Korea: Discover the Wonders of the Silk Road, try your hand at calligraphy, and create a night light based on the constellations studied by Queen Seondek. Read the legend of Seondek’s wisdom and craft a paper peony in her honor.
  5. Islamic Empire: Discover scientific and hygienic advances of the Islamic Empire! Split white light in honor of the scientist who first explained rainbows, grow rock candy as you learn why sweets suddenly became easier to find during this time in Medieval history, and brush your teeth the old fashioned way: with a miswak branch!
  6. Charlemagne: Learn who’s to blame for compulsory schooling and who’s to thank for trial by jury. Follow in Charlemagne’s footsteps by sleeping with a journal under your pillow and make a house to attract one of the most important livestock animals in Charlemagne’s empire: bees.
  7. Vikings: Meet the Viking Queen, Aud the Deep Minded. Get to know the real Vikings as you read a story about Thor and Loki, weave cord on a lucet, decorate and use a drinking horn, and play music on Viking-style pan pipes.
  8. Japan: Discover the age of the Samurai! Make your own mini rock garden, learn the art of origami, and enjoy a tasty treat with a traditional flavor.
  9. Mongols: Ride with Genghis Khan, discover traditional Mongol games, enjoy felting wool, and refresh yourself with a traditional Mongolian drink.
  10. Ming Dynasty: Enter the Forbidden City during the Ming Dynasty! Read the real Ballad of Mulan, learn about the societal importance of fans, discover the origins of printing books and then print your own.
  11. Benin: Tour one of the Medieval centers of art and culture in Benin. Find out how snail shells were used as currency and then make your own cowrie shell jewelry. Hear Benin folklore from an Own Voices author, learn to play the kalimba, relax and unwind with some traditional African soap.
  12. Native Alaska: Discover the vibrant and diverse cultures of Alaska. Paint a wooden mask inspired by the art of Native Alaskans. Learn about the different ways Native Alaskans thrived in their environments and try out a pair of snow goggles. Make an Alaskan yo-yo and read a Tlingit story about Raven. This box about the history of Native peoples in Alaska was created in collaboration with Yupik and Tlingit artists and writers.
